How to connect an AI assistant to your online store

Configure the Indexa AI assistant: product catalog, response language, store information, limits, widget and checking replies to customer questions.

What the assistant needs

The assistant uses your catalog and store information. Connect the product feed first and check the data.

Check that your plan includes the AI assistant. Under “AI provider”, add an available provider, choose a model and enter your own key in the dashboard. If the provider list is empty, contact support.

Enter provider keys only in the designated dashboard field. Do not include them in widget code or instructions.

Enable and configure the assistant

  1. Open “AI assistant → General settings”.

  2. Enable the assistant and set visitor message limits and the limit period.

  3. Choose the tone, default response language and number of product cards.

  4. Set the conversation retention period and save.

Store information

Under “Instructions”, fill in delivery, payment, returns, contacts and any additional conversation preferences.

Use precise, current policies. For example, give the actual return conditions and a contact phone number; avoid promises your store cannot fulfill.

The assistant can ask clarifying questions and offer contact details. This does not automatically transfer a conversation to a human operator.

Widget and installation

Configure the widget texts, appearance and welcome message. If the Indexa code is already installed, another script is not needed.

In “Integration”, set excluded paths if needed. /checkout excludes that page; /checkout/* excludes its subpages. Use both to exclude both the page and its subpages.

Test the responses

  1. Ask about a product from your catalog and check its product card.

  2. Ask about delivery, payment and returns, then compare the replies with your store policies.

  3. Test a missing product and a question in another language.

  4. Review conversations in “Chats” and usage in “Statistics”.

Primary and backup AI providers

In “AI provider”, add the provider, model and its API key. Test the connection before using it. You can replace a key, change a model or remove an unused connection. Provider keys belong only in this form.

Set the primary provider and arrange backups in the desired order. The assistant tries the primary first and uses backups in order if it fails. After changing the order or model, test an actual conversation and check that the selected providers have available quota.

Support hours and promo codes

Under “Instructions”, set working hours for each weekday, days off or 24-hour availability to match real support hours. Keep delivery, payment, returns and contact information up to date.

Add promo codes one per line and describe when they may be offered. Choose whether to offer them only when asked or proactively. Leaving the conditions empty disables promo-code offers. The store must accept the code itself; the assistant does not apply discounts at checkout. Test both a qualifying and a non-qualifying question.

Name, avatar, animations and sounds

In “Widget and texts”, set a name and welcome text for each store language, upload an avatar or restore the default icon. Configure the launcher and chat appearance separately for desktop and mobile.

Enable or disable icon animation and button pulse independently. Message-sent and assistant-reply sounds have separate controls; use the preview before saving. Check readability, button position and the conversation on a phone as well as a computer.

Usage limits and conversation retention

In general assistant settings, set visitor message limits and their period, the maximum catalog calls per response and the number of product cards. These controls help manage usage; plan limits and the AI provider quota also apply.

Set the retention period for inactive conversations. Conversations and their messages are deleted after the configured inactivity period, so review needed conversations beforehand. Select the default response language and test messages in your store languages.

Review customer conversations

Open “AI assistant → Chats”, find a conversation by its date, visitor, language or status and open it to read the messages. Use actual questions to improve store instructions and product data. This page is for reviewing assistant conversations; opening one does not automatically connect a human operator to the shopper.

Assistant statistics

In “AI assistant → Statistics”, select the period and review conversations, messages, events and provider errors, the daily chart and frequent events. Compare the same date range when evaluating changes. For provider errors, test the key and model on the provider page and check the primary and backup order. Search analytics and assistant statistics measure different interactions and need not have identical counts.
